Ageing Wisely
Ageing Wisely is an evidence-based psychological group program developed and evaluated by researchers at Macquarie University. It is designed for older adults experiencing worry, low mood, or finding it difficult to adjust to some of the challenges that can accompany later life.
For some people, changes in health or independence, caring for others, the loss of loved ones, changes in relationships, or other life transitions can leave them feeling worried, overwhelmed, isolated, or simply not quite like themselves. Ageing Wisely provides a supportive environment to learn practical psychological strategies, connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges, and build confidence in managing life's changes.

Access and rebates
A GP referral for group psychological therapy and a current Mental Health Treatment Plan may enable eligible participants to receive Medicare rebates for their sessions. An out-of-pocket (gap) payment is likely and will depend on individual circumstances.
Benefits
Participants will learn practical strategies to improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen coping skills, and build confidence in managing life's challenges. Mindfulness
Mindfulness can enhance mental health and support making changes in a person's life. It can quieten the mind, help with feeling less stressed, less tired, and gain a deeper sense of wellbeing. Our groups enable people to learn and implement mindfulness meditation practice into their daily lives.
The programs include guided meditations, psychoeducation, gentle movement and stretches, meaningful discussions, and opportunities to look at habits and make some positive adjustments.
Regular mindfulness practice has been found to:
- Decrease anxiety, depression, and irritability
- Protect against the harmful effects of stress on mental health
- Be effective in helping people manage symptoms of illness, and to live more fully despite illness
- Reduce emotional distress and increase quality of life and wellbeing
- Lessen feelings of loneliness
- Have a protective effect on cognitive ageing
- Improve sleep quality
